  2. The CD-ROM "The Cannes Film Festival" brings you 
  3. the thrill of the great moments of the Cannes Film 
  4. Festival - past, present and future.
  5.  
  6. With a catalog of more than 4000 films, you can 
  7. discover several thousand photographs of your favorite 
  8. stars, close to 30 minutes of video, all the information 
  9. on the prizes, and much more.  As you browse this CD, 
  10. you will come to the Cannes Festival very well.
  11.  
  12. The encyclopedia will allow you to find all the 
  13. information on your favorite stars, a specific film or 
  14. director, a country - even a specific award.  
  15.  
  16. When you are finished, you can test your knowledge of 
  17. the 7th art in the Quiz section.
  18.  
  19. CONFIGURATION
  20.  
  21. The CD-ROM adapts automatically to the configuration 
  22. of your monitor: 256, 32 thousand, or 16 million colors.
  23.  
  24. For optimal viewing, we suggest you configure you 
  25. system for 32 or 64 thousand colors and a screen 
  26. resolution of 640x480.
  27.  
  28. For questions concerning the videos please see the end 
  29. of this document.

  31. Printing:  The print function will send all jobs to your 
  32. default printer.
  33.  
  34. NAVIGATION
  35. The CD-ROM has ten main sections and a personal 
  36. photo album.  To use the different sections, move the 
  37. cursor to a specific icon and click.
  38.  
  39. There are also three options that allow you to browse 
  40. different panoramas by year: The Stars, The Awards, 
  41. and the Life of the Festival.  To choose a year, click on 
  42. the buttons underneath the year.  The year will change, 
  43. and this will change these sections.
  44.  
  45. The Web offers you up-to-the-minute access to our 
  46. server if you have access to an Internet connection.
  47.  
  48. When you are viewing an image you can click on the 
  49. image to interrupt its loading.  If you want to reload it, 
  50. just click on it again.  To interrupt an image that is 
  51. loading and view a text instead, click on the photo, 
  52. then click outside of the photo.

  54. To stop a video that is playing simply click on it.

  56. AVAILABLE OPTIONS

  58. THE AWARDS
  59. Learn which film won which award for each year.
  60. In this section, you will be shown which film took the 
  61. Palme d'Or.  From there, you have the option of seeing 
  62. each of the other winners for that year, too:  the Prix 
  63. d'Interpretation, the Prix du Jury and all the rest.
  64.  
  65. THE LIFE OF THE FESTIVAL
  66. See the events that mark each festival, hear all the 
  67. rumors, feel the ambiance of that year.  In this section, 
  68. you will find the videos that cover the festival between 
  69. 1946 and 1976.  That's not all.  You will also find 
  70. videos of the 1994 and '95 festivals made especially for 
  71. this CD-ROM.

  73. At any time during the video, you can leave it by 
  74. simply clicking.
  75.  
  76. THE STARS
  77. See the greatest stars of the silver screen.  You can 
  78. zoom in to get a vision of life on the screen and learn 
  79. more about them in the biographies section.

  81. PHOTO ALBUM
  82. In your trip through the half-century of the Cannes 
  83. Festival you will be able to choose up to  2000 of your 
  84. favorite photos to make your own album.  
  85.  
  86. To pick the photo you wish to place, click to load it, 
  87. click on it again, then click on the right mouse button 
  88. to insert it into the album.  You can select photos from 
  89. any section of the CD except The Web,  Intermission, 
  90. and The Life of the Festival.

  92. Once you have started your album, you can save it, 
  93. copy it to a diskette, trade it with your friends, or send 
  94. it to us. For more information on the technical options 
  95. of this section, see the end of the document.

  97. The best albums will be added to the Web server along 
  98. with our selections which you can view and download.

  100. To open your personal album, click on the group of 
  101. four people who are walking towards the Palais des 
  102. festivales in the main menu.

  104. THE WEB
  105. Direct access to our Web server via the Internet is 
  106. available in this section.  During the festival, the site 
  107. will be updated daily.  When you are connected, if you 
  108. call a page with images you can interrupt its loading 
  109. and go directly to the following page.

  114. INTERMISSION
  115. In this section you will discover the famous Nescafe 
  116. trailers, which have been an integral part of the Festival 
  117. since 1945.

  120. In this section you will learn about the organization of 
  121. the festival, its history, its key dates many other critical 
  122. facts.

  125. Here you will discover the celebrated city that hosts the 
  126. festival each year.

  129. This section contains statistics and vital information 
  130. which will help you better understand and appreciate 
  131. the development of the art of films and filmmaking.

  134. Test you knowledge of film and see if you can are truly 
  135. a film expert.

  137. You can test yourself with a series of 20 questions.  
  138. Each time you enter the section, these questions will 
  139. change.  Try for a perfect score of 20 out of 20--have 
  140. fun, and good luck!!

  142. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA
  143. To find all of the information possible on the 7th art at 
  144. Cannes and your favorite films.
  145.  
  146. The Encyclopedia allows you to search for whatever 
  147. information you wish using several different criteria.  
  148. To begin a session, you need to first select your criteria, 
  149. then you launch your search.  The information on each 
  150. film is extensive and variable and a simple search may 
  151. yield only a title or producer (particularly if you are 
  152. searching for short films), or it may give you a detailed 
  153. file with a full resume of the film including the most 
  154. important photos.
  155.  
  156. To Search, you have three options:
  157.  
  158. -Search by title and year
  159. To enter the title and year, move the mouse to the 
  160. section you wish to search and click.  Type either the 
  161. full title, or the first few letters.  For best results do not 
  162. type articles like "the, a," etc..  You can also combine a 
  163. title search with a search by year.
  164.  
  165. -Search by Cast
  166. Begin as if you were searching by title, but click in the 
  167. corresponding section.  The search will work equally 
  168. well for actor, directors, producers, or other celebrities.  
  169. Using this option you can get a list of the works of a 
  170. particular person. and you can follow the styles of the 
  171. films associated with that person.
  172.  
  173. -Search by Country, Prize and Year
  174. Click on the country and the prize you wish to search.  
  175. The up and down buttons allow you to scroll through 
  176. the list of available countries.  If you do not wish to 
  177. search by prize, click on the "all films" option.  You 
  178. can combine your search results with the year you wish 
  179. to search, also.
  180.  
  181. After you have made your search selections, hit return 
  182. or enter, or double-click on your selection.  
  183. The search can take several seconds to find the 
  184. information you have specified.  The list of the films or 
  185. people will be displayed in a separate window.  Select 
  186. the particular film or person you want from the list 
  187. displayed in this window.
  188.  
  189. If any photos are available, they will be displayed 
  190. automatically.
  191.  
  192. EXIT
  193. To quit the CD-ROM, click on the Exit icon in the 
  194. bottom-left of the screen.
  195.  
  196. Saving and sending your photo album
  197. The album is found in a small file that saves pointers to 
  198. the specific images.  The file is called album.txt and it 
  199. can be found in the directory on your hard drive where 
  200. the main Cannes files were installed (normally this is 
  201. c:\cannes).  You can copy the file to diskette and send it 
  202. to other people who have the Cannes CD-ROM.
  203. To send it to us, attach it to an e-mail message and 
  204. transmit it to: album@filmfestivals.com.

  232. Video for Windows will not be installed automatically 
  233. from the CD-ROM during the regular setup if it is 
  234. already installed on your computer.

  236. If Video for Windows does not function correctly, you 
  237. can install it yourself from the version found on the 
  238. CD-ROM.

  240. Use the RUN command in the File Manager and enter 
  241. the follow path and file name: d:\vfw\setup.exe
  242.  
  243. Note: On PC configurations without a sound card 
  244. available it is necessary to click the mouse button to 
  245. start the videos.
